PAGANISM

Pagan Celtic Britain ~ Usually ships in 2-3 days
Anne Ross / Paperback / Published 1997
Our Price: $14.36 ~ You Save: $3.59 (20%)
For a people that at one time dominated much of Europe, very little is known of the Celts and their religion, yet many flimsy theories and fanciful relationships have grown up over the years based on the scant evidence available. In a scholarly and systematic study, Anne Ross draws on all of the available evidence--archaeological sites in Europe and the British Isles, ancient Greek and Roman writers and early British vernacular literature--to separate the grain of what we know from the chaff of accreted misinformation and loose interpretation.

Mentawai Shaman : Keeper of the Rain Forest : Man, Nature, and Spirits in Remote Indonesia ~ Usually ships in 2-3 days
Charles Lindsay / Hardcover / Published 1992
Our Price: $39.95
A colorful portfolio of 80 photographs, augmented with excerpts from ethnographic/naturalist photographer Lindsay's journals, tells of an archaic tribe--the Mentawaians or "original people"--who live in the rain forest of Siberut, an isolated, ecologically unique jungle island in Indonesia. An historical essay by anthropologist Reimar Schefold provides an accessible overview of their way of life and of the extent to which it is menaced by progress. 9.25x12.25" Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

The Rulings of the Night : An Ethnography of Nepalese Shaman Oral Texts ~ Usually ships in 24 hours
Gregory G. Maskarinec / Hardcover / Published 1995
Our Price: $24.95
"The Rulings of the Night offers something new to the anthropology of language and ritual. Built on impeccably careful fieldwork, and beautiful at times in its transparency, the book gets back to the words themselves in crafting an understanding of the deadly important play between shamanic prayers and social reality in the Nepal Himalayas. The author's novel focus on the pragmatics of everyday speech is sure to provoke argument (and a much needed one, at that), but, like the Nepali shaman's mythic songs, the book is also sure to intrigue, captivate, and transform."

Shaman : An Illustrated Guide (Living Wisdom) ~ Usually ships in 2-3 days
Piers Vitebsky / Paperback / Published 1995
Our Price: $11.96 ~ You Save: $2.99 (20%)
"A shaman from Nepal met a Westerner who remarked how good it must be to live in harmony with the cosmos. The shaman replied, 'The main part of my job is killing witches and sorcerers.'" Anthropologist Piers Vitebsky gives us a balanced account of shamans and shamanic practices from Siberia to the Amazon rain forest that takes into account every facet of a mysterious and increasingly popular religious phenomenon. Field-work anecdotes combined with hundreds of full-color photographs draw the reader into a complex essentialist world which, though it may be following primitive societies into extinction, seems to still manifest itself in many aspects of modern man's religion, literature, and psyche. Extensive bibliography includes a list of new shamanic movements.

The Shaman : Patterns of Religious Healing Among the Ojibway Indians (Civilization of the American Indian, Vol 165)
John A. Grim / Paperback / Published 1988
Our Price: $12.76 ~ You Save: $3.19 (20%)
The author wisely places the practices of shamanism within the cultural context. At no point does the author make the mistake of reducing the shamanic practices to deities and such but correctly emphasizes the "forces" and movements of nature of which the shaman is an "expression." Excellent read for anyone generally interested in shamanism or specifically in the Ojibwe practices of the Mide society.

Shaman and the Medicine Wheel ~ Usually ships in 24 hours
Evelyn Eaton, Fred Berensmeier (Illustrator) / Paperback / Published 1982

An interesting read if you want to learn about Native American spirituality and medicine wheels. This book contains a segment of the author's life history and her experiences on her life path. It also contains a brief description of how to set up a medicine wheel of your own. Quite a bit involves her battle with her own illness. She also deals with her problems relating to full-blooded Native Americans, since she is of mixed blood.

Druid-Shaman-Priest : Metaphors of Celtic Paganism
Leslie Ellen Jones / Hardcover / Published 1998
Our Price: $45.00 (Back Ordered)
The author, Leslie Ellen Jones (lejones@ucla.edu, November 30, 1998
Why are people so consistently fascinated by the druids?
I have a Ph.D. in Folklore & Mythology, specializing in Celtic myth. I wrote this book because I found myself increasingly frustrated with scholars, on the one hand, repeating over and over, "We know virtually nothing about the druids, the pagan priestly class of the Celts," and neo-pagans, on the other hand, insisting that druidism had remained unchanged in hiding for nearly two millennia. So much ink has been spilled over the subject of druids and druidism that at times it seems that all that can be seen is one's own face reflecting back out of the opaque pool. So this book is an attempt to tidy up the field of play, as it were, by looking at how the idea of the druid has changed over time, in the descriptions of druids by Classical authors, the images of pagan priests found in medieval Irish and Welsh saints' lives, the archaeological speculations of eighteenth-century antiquarians, and in twentieth-century movies and television. I also take a side-trip to consider whether Celtic culture was "shamanic", and if so, were the druids shamans? (My conclusion, incidentally, is that pagan Celtic culture was shamanic, but their shamans weren't the druids.) I hope to have shown that the longevity of the druid is not based in unchanging preservation, but in the very flexibility of the idea of the druid.

When Santa Was a Shaman : The Ancient Origins of Santa Claus & the Christmas Tree
Tony Van Renterghem
While the author may indulge in some loose and imaginative anthropology, all the facts presented are true! This is a really enjoyable book, a *fun* book, and a great introduction to the actual history of Xmas, one of the most misunderstood holidays. Most people will be surprised to find out why Santa wears red and white (Coca-cola, 1931) or the ecological context of our relationship with Santa. I highly recommend this book to people who think that Xmas has something to do with Christianity, or those that enjoy seeing human history in a whole new light. Buy a copy for yourself, or it makes a good mind-opening gift.

The Modernity of Witchcraft : Politics and the Occult in Postcolonial Africa (Sorcellerie Et Politique En Afrique-LA Viande Des Autres) ~ Usually ships in 2-3 days
Peter Geschiere, Janet Roitman (Translator) / Hardcover / Published 1997
Our Price: $59.50
In the Modernity of Witchcraft, Peter Geschiere uses his own experiences among the Maka and in other parts of eastern and southern Cameroon, as well as other anthropological research, to argue that contemporary ideas and practices of witchcraft are more a response to modern exigencies than a lingering cultural custom. The prevalence of witchcraft, especially in African politics and entrepreneurship, demonstrates the unlikely balance it has achieved with the forces of modernity. Geschiere explores why modern techniques and commodities, usually of Western provenance, have become central in rumors of the occult.

The Night Has a Naked Soul : Witchcraft and Sorcery Among the Western Cherokee
Alan Kilpatrick / Hardcover / Published 1997
Our Price: $28.95
In a work that spans nearly two centuries, anthropologist Alan Kilpatrick explores the occult world of the Western Cherokee, expounding on previously collected documents and translating some forty new shamanistic texts that have never been disclosed to outside audiences. For over a hundred and fifty years, the Cherokee Indians have been recording their medico-magical traditions in the native script of the Sequoyah syllabary. These shamanistic texts, known as idi:gawe':sdi, deal with such esoteric matters as divining the future, protecting oneself from enemies (living and dead), destroying the power of witches, and purifying one's soul from all forms of supernatural harm. As one of the few scholars able to translate the discourse, Kilpatrick's work underlines the critical role of transformational language in the ritual performance.

The Witch-Hunt; Or, the Triumph of Morality ~ Usually ships in 2-3 days
F. G. Bailey, F. G. Baily / Paperback / Published 1996
Our Price: $15.95
This mature ethnography of the rural east Indian village of Bisipara in the 1950s captures the spirit of life in a small community isolated from the outside world. Bailey (Anthropology/Univ. of California, San Diego; The Kingdom of Individuals, not reviewed) employs a ``cultural event'' as an entry point into the ``complex web'' of the society that he describes. When a young woman dies of cerebral malaria during the off-season, the local village council interprets her death as being the result of a malevolent devata, or godlike spirit that can be kept for good luck. The council hires a diviner to determine who in the village has been keeping a devata, and five men are fined for possibly causing the girl's death.
